orient meets occident. collector edition of jaime zenamon’s debut album from 1984 available now! zenamon studied guitar and composition in israel, spain, portugal and in various south american countries. he a was student of abel carlevaro and worked as teacher at the berlin music university (hdk) from 1980 until 1992. the album was recorded at christopher franke’s (tangerine dream) studio and features udo hanten from the cult krautrock project you. similar sound compared to cluster, neu!, kraftwerk but with stronger esoteric world music influences. nandu muley playing the santoor, a 100 string music instrument which was already used by assyrian musicians for the production of their hits some thousand years ago :) originally released on polydor in 1984 the album get’s re-released for the first time by private records in 2015. remastered from the original master tapes at 24 bit. really rare recordings, especially the 12“ is one of the most valuable and sought after german electronic records of the 1980’s.

constantin xenakis work possesses exactly what i really love about intelligent electronic music. its stylishly repetitive, coded, mechanical but, at the same time, very organic and playful. this is how argyris theofilis, also known as zodiac free arts club, explains his fascination with european artist constantin xenakis. born in cairo, xenakis work often includes written script, in particular symbols andcodes of everyday life, traffic signs, alchemy, the zodiac, mathematical and chemical symbols, egyptian hieroglyphics as well as letters from the greek, phoenician, hebrew and arabic alphabets.a balance between human and inhuman that makes his art somehow mystical. after becoming fixated by xenakis, the greek music producer searched and eventually met him for the first time in 2012. after several meetings in paris and athens, they both decided to present structures + codes, a concept album conceived as an homage to the painters vision. each one of the eight songs in the album corresponds to a painting by xenakis, translating its intricate shapes and patterns into spirit-lifting compositions filled with elliptic arpeggios, repetitive drum machines and esoteric melodies in proper kosmische manner. but this is not a mere exercise in style. as xenakis paintings, its music that transcends its own codes to become an esoteric experience. this record should be heard comfortably.

following the u.s. army’s liberation of munich in may 1945, the world’s first amerikahaus was inaugurated there with a library, a magazine reading room, a children’s library, a record and lm department, and lecture and seminar rooms, together with a concert hall and exhibition space. up to 80.000 people a month utilized the offerings of amerikahaus during its early years. beginning in 1953, the united states information agency (usia), an institution founded as an instrument of the cold war, began to finance amerikahaus. in addition to representing the u.s., its principal task in west germany was to democratize and denazify the postwar population. after the beginning of the cold war, many of these re-educative measures also served as propaganda in a programmatic linking of democratic and economic principles meant to strengthen transatlantic relations against the communist bloc. in 1997, the u.s. government concluded its work at amerikahaus in munich and shipped almost all its items back to the states. however, 1.630 long-playing vinyl records from the library were left behind in cardboard boxes in the basement. when michaela melián looked through this forgotten collection, one of the first things she came across was don gillis’ 1940 tone poem »portrait of a frontier town«, whose second movement is entitled »where the west begins«. don gillis, a composer and radio producer, used the musical styles and genres of that decade to create an explicitly american program music. michaela melián’s »music from a frontier town« is fueled by the diverse sonic material of this extensive record collection once considered as an instrument of cultural education. this record has been produced in addition to melián’s twenty-four hour performative music installation »music from a frontier town« in the garage of what is now the bavarian center for transatlantic relations at karolinenplatz, munich (4-5 may 2018).

rickard jäverling, born and raised in borlange, sweden, and now living and working in stockholm is a wayward and productive musician. besides releasing material under his own name, jäverling is/has been part of constellations such as dodens dal, liljor and jäverling von euler. album 3, released on hoga nord rekords is his third solo album. album 3 breathes psychedelia, dub, swedish folk, progg and continental vintage electronic music. the songs on this album are in a way like a compilation of short stories rather than chapters in a novel. the common factor in this album is jäverlings exquisitely worked out melodies and the warm, round production but the songs can, due to the rich storytelling qualities of each one of them, almost be regarded as small albums of their own! the music made by richard jäverling is an embrace, a relative with a house by the swedish west coast or a day off, midweek in april. this album is inviting and calming but also as solid and mighty as a dalecarlian beech tree.

jah mel sees himself as a musical bridge between the original reggae sound & the dancehall sound of today, representing what he calls the real dancehall revolution, merging the spirituality of the old school & the energy of the new school. “guiding star” and “stand up to it” are the perfect examples to overstand this definition. both song were produced by roydale anderson aka andy s. “guding star” will definitely give you thrills if you are into deep synth and heavy digital rhythm, while the superb piano notes will warm you in the analog style. beware of “guiding star” dub version called “guidance (dance mix)” that will break any bunker. “stand up to it” rhythm is an adaptation of one of the most classic jamaican riddim called “heavenless”. you will never know this riddim like before, this version takes the riddim to another level. a positive song with a bionic nuclear bomb dubwise! play it loud, jah is our guiding star!

bruno patchworks hovart is one of the top producers of todays groove music scene. after playing as a bassist and guitarist for various bands, he started producing in the mid-nineties and has kept on mixing todays technologies with the raw spirits of house, electronic, disco, funk, soul, reggae & jazz musics golden years since then. following the trail of success left by his various projects as patchworks, and under many aliases, hes proved his musical ubiquity and unexpectedly stroke in various genres. today, hes back under the edr records umbrella, following up to his various ep for the label, and meanwhile pursuing a comeback to his early love for house music. many house music diggers would indeed remember that before favorite recordings was launched in 2006, patchworks and pascal rioux produced many deep-house tracks on the rotax disques imprint. besides since the late 90s, patchworks has also collaborated with labels such as q-tape, or still music, delivering many clubbing hits such as million toes, sugar, or minautor. on this 5 tracks ep, he delivers 4 killer tunes again, inspired by the michael jackson’s classic hit, rock with you.

after the release of brazilian disco boogie sounds (fvr098), favorite recordings follows-up, this time focusing on its homeland language. helped by a close connoisseur friend, dj and collector charles maurice presents a fine selection of what he thinks represent best the amazing energy of this specific movement and period. with 10 rare titles, all produced between 1975 and 1984, he shows a perfect picture of what you could find in french record stores at that time, on one hand, tracks by overdrive, marché noir, didier makaga or france-lise, were produced by underground artists and labels from the french caribbean and african community and also filled with the raw spirit of this tropical stamping. on the other hand, tracks by beckie bell, kelly, le club, or bernard guyvan, were released by major labels such as trëma, carrere, disques vogue, or pathé marconi, thanks to confirmed independent producers, acting not only in france, but also in canada and the us. today, favorite recordings and charles maurice are very proud to shed some light again on these gems, and hopefully offer them a new life on your turntable

after his initial release on world unknown records way back in 2011 - a tunethat featured on andrew weatherall s ministry of sound masterpiece 2012 compilation - kalidasa has also released music via magic feet and tusk wax. this latest release sees him ploughing along a similar musical line. the mirage and sun aki are both tracks for those who like to chug-along to the more refined, no frills tunes that do exactly what they say on the tin. both are perfect spaced out and otherworldly grooves for strobe filled and lazer infused dark basements. soft rocks throw around some magical dust on the flip for their sun goes up, sun goes down remix which sees them turn the mirage into a 9 minute time lapse venturing from an early morning ambient start through to a pulsating electronic drive through the stars.

coletivo vandalismo kick-start a new 12inch series for the contort yourself label. hailing from the city of porto the duo also dj under the name gam and released their debut lp on lake haze s eye for an eye label. their music has an immediacy that seems to stem from a background in live performance as opposed to polished studio sessions - an improvisational punk aesthetic that manages to carry this ep so strongly. wild, crashing fx and unrecognisable vocal distortions layer atop wonky 90bpm drum machine grooves and the pair even show off what may be their turntablism skills on zombie zombie. theres a nod to early concrete on the closing track black suns demise with whirring, mechanical noise motifs suddenly jolting us into punishing gabber-at-33-minus-8 territory. the diy spirit is alive and well here and the feeling that things could fall apart at any minute just adds to the tension.

since 2014 the innate blog has been delivering high quality slow journalism, serving up articles that shine a light on artists that have otherwise gone under the radar. four years on, the innate team has decided to launch their own label with the same stated aims, namely to showcase deep electronic music with warmth and soul, produced by unheralded heroes old and new. the labels first release a four-track, multi-artist missive offers a neat summary of what listeners can expect to hear in the months and years ahead. the ep opens with something rather special: a sparkling, life-affirming fusion of b12 style intelligent techno and larry heard-esque flourishes from debutant gilbert, a sound designer and future star from innate s home city of bristol. it s followed on side a by a similarly shimmering chunk of techno futurism from freerotation resident and cubic space collective member mark hand. formidable irish producer lerosa has previously impressed via fine releases for a myriad of high quality underground labels, so it s no surprise that his contribution to innate 001 a mind-altering, otherworldly jack-track entitled shadow is the ep s most robust and intense moment. fittingly, its innate founder owain k who draws the ep to a close. hes long been renowned for creating immersive, ultra deep dancefloor workouts, and pixeled scenery is amongst his most magical moments yet.

ayuune sule brings the soul into kologo power. in kumasi, the second city of ghana and capitol of the ashanti region, ayuune sule is the main kologo star. the most famous kologo player these days in the whole of ghana and abroad is king ayisoba. together with king ayisoba, guy one, atongo zimba and sambo, he represents the generation that broke kologo music outside of the north east region of ghana. in europe we know ayuune sule as a member of king ayisoba’s band and as a solo artist who often opens up for his shows.

faitiche is happy to be releasing the album improvisations and edits, tokyo 26.09.2001 on vinyl for the first time. for the original 2002 cd on soup-disk and sub rosa (audiosphere), jan jelinek and the japanese trio computer soup (satoru hori – trumpet, osamu okubo - toys & electronics, kei ikeda - toys & electronics) presented eight tracks all recorded one afternoon in the trio’s living room in tokyo. they are excerpts from a joint group improvisation that subsequently underwent rudimentary editing, on which jelinek and computer soup worked separately.

vienna-based producer sam irl popped up on our radar a couple of years ago following stellar releases on jazz & milk, but honestly we should have been paying far closer attention as this guy has been making the best crunchy, mpc-driven jazz-infused house music dating right back to 2006. ep’s for s3a’s sampling as an art and collaborative projects with patrick pulsinger and dusty have won him fans including gilles peterson (leading to a release on brownswood), mr scruff and session victim amongst many others. his live sets have also seen him perform at the hallowed grounds of panorama bar and sonar festival. for his debut ep here on freerange sam has delivered four tracks which perfectly showcase his production skills and knowledge of what makes a dance floor tick, kicking off with title track rain technique. quirky keys and a playful groove help build a warm and charming vibe, light and bouncy yet deep and driving enough to get your dance on to. trust follows with loping, lopsided percussion forming the basis of the groove, sparse rhodes pads punctuating the beat and adding just the right musical element to the mix without cluttering the beats or compromising the sense of space. flipping over we have all thats left which sees sam utilising his trusted tr606 for some lovely snappy snares and sizzling hihats. chiming arpeggios join the repeating chord riff creating another simple yet uplifting and playful mood which cant fail to get under your skin. closing the ep we have a wonky, shuffling house track which once again shows sam proving less is more, sampling his key elements into the mpc and jamming out the arrangement in a live and improvised way which brings a fresh, somewhat naive appeal to the production.

since the early 1990s, keyboard player jessica lauren has been a familiar part of london s alternative music scene. jessica s keyboard skills have augmented the live performances and studio recordings of world renowned artists such as jean carne, tom browne, dexter wansel and james mason, japan s united future organisation, and uk soul diva juliet roberts. her previous freestyle album jessica lauren four (2012) highlighted jessica s minimalist approach, something rare and refreshing in the jazz world: she instills her compositions and playing with a refined sense of space which makes her music as much about what she doesn t play as what she does.

audio-visual artists soundwalk collective were granted exclusive access to the personal archive of the groundbreaking filmmaker and present their ambitious new album and remix ep: what we leave behind. the nyc and berlin based group were invited to aurally explore the archive of the seminal french director jean-luc godard and release their interpretations in an innovative new album what we leave behind. drawing on godards personal collection of shot film, reel- to-reels and historical ephemera, the recordings reveal the moments before and after the camera rolls, from stage directions and on-set asides to rehearsals, false stars and outtakes.
